TD₿: The Legendary Treasure of Satoshi Nakamoto by Tomer Strolight
TL;DR The true origin story of Bitcoin’s appearance in the world is one of the most fascinating mysteries ever told.
Hey Bitcoiners,
One of the aspects of Bitcoin that captivated my imagination from the very start was the story of Satoshi Nakamoto.
It still blows my mind that no one knows the identity of the person, or group of persons, who gifted the world digital sound money.
Who is Satoshi? Where is he now? Is he keeping track of his invention’s adoption as it continues to impact lives all over the planet?
There is also the mystery surrounding Satoshi’s coins. Does he still have access to them? Will they eventually move one day?
I like to think Satoshi always understood that in order for Bitcoin to be indestructible and truly decentralized, it required him to leave. The last thing he had to do to ensure Bitcoin’s survival was to walk away from his own brainchild.
It takes a special person to not only invent Bitcoin, but also have the sensibility and selflessness to walk away from unprecedented fame, fortune, and power.
Tomer Strolight recently published a moving blog post that digs into the story of Satoshi Nakamoto and its significance. (09/06/2022)
Personally, I like to imagine a scene of Satoshi back in 2011 standing on a dock in some remote, beautiful lake. In his hands, he holds an old laptop that contains the private keys to the bitcoin he mined. In one fell swoop, he tosses his laptop into the water. It hits the water with a kerplop and disappears under the surface. He then turns, pauses, a smile comes across his face, and he slowly walks away.
When Satoshi disappeared it truly made Bitcoin leaderless, and for that, we are eternally grateful for not only the gift he gave us, but also the sacrifice he made in doing so.
