TD₿: Politics vs. Technology by Hal Finney
TL;DR If we want freedom and privacy in the digital age, we must persuade others that these are worth having.
Hey Bitcoiners,
For as long as I can remember, there has been a healthy debate between Bitcoiners on whether campaigning for Bitcoin at the political level is a waste of time or not.
Some will argue that Bitcoin doesn’t need government approval or to be cheerleaded by politicians in order to reach mass adoption, and in a way, they are right. Bitcoin will continue to function block after block no matter if governments decide to embrace it or reject it. The ability of Bitcoin to change the world is written in its code.
But on the other hand, the transition to a Bitcoin world would be much less volatile if we educated and convinced others in positions of political power on how Bitcoin could benefit their constituents.
As we have seen with technologies in the past, the government may not be able to kill Bitcoin, but they certainly have the power to slow its adoption down, and that would be a poor outcome for everyone as fiat currencies continue to be devalued at an increasingly rapid pace around the world.
Bitcoin pioneer Hal Finney wrote this blog post that examined the relationship between politics and technology. (01/02/1994)
As we transition to a world in which Bitcoin is widely used, I would rather that transition be as smooth as possible. This is why I support organizations like SatsCenter and the Bitcoin Policy Institute which are providing education to elected officials and regulators who want to learn about how Bitcoin can empower economic advancement and financial inclusion across the world.
