TD₿: Nobody Understands Bitcoin (And That's Ok) by Jameson Lopp
TL;DR This multifaceted technology is different things to different people, and we should accept that
Hey Bitcoiners,
The Bitcoin community is one of the most diverse groups of individuals I’ve ever encountered before in my life.
Bitcoiners come in all shapes and sizes, and they are attracted to Bitcoin for very different reasons.
For instance, an individual living in the U.S. who’s trying to send money to a family member in Africa is going to come to Bitcoin because he sees it as a more efficient and cheaper payment system compared to traditional alternatives.
A person living under an authoritarian regime with increased risks of their wealth being seized or censored will turn to Bitcoin as a way to protect the fruits of their labor.
A young developer may be attracted to Bitcoin due to their interest in new and exciting open source technology.
While an investor in America may see Bitcoin as a hedge in their portfolio or a way to speculate on its continued adoption.
The point is that Bitcoin is multifaceted and represents different things to different people so it is impossible for one single person to fully understand it. That’s part of the reason why we have this confluence of ideas and cultures in the Bitcoin community that can often clash with one another…and that’s ok!
Jameson Lopp wrote this article explaining how nobody can fully understand Bitcoin and there is no “correct” way to explain this complicated technology (03/11/2017).
As Jameson poignantly said, “The Tao of Bitcoin is not understanding bitcoin, it is accepting that bitcoin is what it is.”

Quote of the Day
“Bitcoiners are pro-freedom, and the freedom of self-determination is a fundamental human right. Unlike authoritarians, most Bitcoiners respect the personal choices of others and can still work together on common goals regardless of how different they are as individuals.” - Daniel Buchner, Head of Decentralized Identity at Block
