TD₿: Map of the Bitcoin Network by Gloria Zhao
TL;DR This is a beginner-friendly “map” to help you navigate through the wide variety of nodes, software, and participants in the Bitcoin Network.
Hey Bitcoiners,
The word “node” gets thrown out there a lot in Bitcoin. Running a full node is important so you can send and receive transactions with Bitcoin in a sovereign manner.
When an individual is running a full node, they don’t have to trust any person or entity on whether the bitcoin they are receiving is real bitcoin or not. They can fully validate all the blocks and transactions themselves.
Running a full node is important because it not only allows people to use Bitcoin in a permissionless way, but it also benefits the network as a whole. The more full nodes that individuals run, the more decentralized and immune to censorship the network becomes.
But did you know there are several different types of Bitcoin nodes?
For instance, a mining node is a node that produces new blocks and has specific features like keeping a mempool of unconfirmed transactions and solving the hash puzzle to add a new block to the ledger.
Gloria Zhao wrote a blog post for beginners so they can better understand all the different components that make up the Bitcoin network titled Map of the Bitcoin Network. (07/12/2020)
Last month, Gloria became the first known woman to have the honor of being named a Bitcoin Core maintainer. She now has special permissions to execute changes to the Bitcoin code and joins a long list of respected developers who have held that title.
If you’re a beginner trying to learn about how Bitcoin operates, I can’t think of a better person to learn from. Check out her blog post, and congratulations, Gloria!

Quote of the Day
“A node is how you interact with the Bitcoin network. A node removes the middle man between you and your Bitcoin. A node is how you enforce the rules, and independently audit the supply. A node is how your partake in governance, and become sovereign. Run a node.” - Justine Harper, VP of Business Development at Unchained Capital
