El Salvador to Continue Accelerating Bitcoin Buys Despite IMF Deal Concessions
El Salvador has struck a $1.4 billion loan agreement with the IMF, requiring the country to make Bitcoin use voluntary for the private sector and limit public sector involvement.
Despite these changes, Stacy Herbert, head of El Salvador’s National Bitcoin Office, stated the country will continue buying Bitcoin, potentially at an accelerated pace, for its Strategic Bitcoin Reserve.
El Salvador adopted Bitcoin as legal tender in 2021, alongside the U.S. dollar, but the policy faced criticism from the IMF. President Nayib Bukele, who spearheaded the Bitcoin law, has purchased over 5,900 BTC worth $579.4 million as part of the country’s reserve.
As part of the policy adjustments, the government plans to phase out its Chivo wallet, which provided citizens with $30 in Bitcoin upon launch. While Bukele remains popular for his crime crackdown, Bitcoin adoption has seen limited enthusiasm among Salvadorans.
