TD₿: Bitcoin's Habitats by Gigi
TL;DR Bitcoin lives across domains, with one foot in the purely informational realm and one foot in the physical realm.
Hey Bitcoiners,
Bitcoin can be thought of as the technological connection between the physical, financial, and informational realms.
On the one hand, you have the idea of Bitcoin, the code, if you will. In this digital realm, Bitcoin is constantly incorporating new information and upgrading its code when appropriate.
On the other hand, there are aspects to Bitcoin’s system that exist in the physical realm. This includes all the hardware involved in Bitcoin. This can be thought of as all of the nodes, wires, ASIC chips, mining machines, and cables required to allow Bitcoin to function properly. On top of that, real-world energy powers Bitcoin’s network as it’s used to power the nodes that communicate transactions and the miners that produce new bitcoins and add valid blocks to the Bitcoin ledger.
However, when it comes down to it, Bitcoin is just information. Because of this, it technically lives on the Internet. I use the words “lives” on purpose because, in many ways, Bitcoin can be thought of as a living organism constantly evolving and fighting for its own survival.
These ideas originated from a unique philosophical exploration from Gigi that touches on how Bitcoin lives at the intersection of meatspace, cyberspace, and finspace. (03/01/2020)
Given its decentralized nature, Bitcoin has shown the ability to survive and thrive at the center of these different environments. For the first time in human history, we have a resilient form of money that connects our digital world with the physical one.
