2018 - Ohio became the first US state to allow taxes to be paid in Bitcoin
On November 26, 2018, Ohio became the first U.S. state to allow businesses to pay taxes using Bitcoin through a dedicated platform, OhioCrypto.com. Businesses could register, enter tax details, and make payments via a compatible Bitcoin wallet.
Payments were processed by BitPay, converting Bitcoin to dollars for the state to minimize exposure to price volatility. Taxes like tobacco sales, employee withholding, and public utilities could be paid in Bitcoin, with plans to expand the option to individuals in the future. Ohio's initiative succeeded, whereas similar proposals in other states, such as Arizona and Illinois, faced challenges.
