TD₿: Bitcoin: Knowledge and Perceptions (a report) by Block, Inc.
TL;DR The reasons to buy Bitcoin differ by region and income group.
Hey Bitcoiners,
As an American living in one of the wealthiest nations in the world, it’s easy to get stuck looking at Bitcoin through a certain lens.
Many privileged Westerners look at Bitcoin still only as an investment that can fit into a broader portfolio as an inflation hedge. They are looking at it as a way to improve their risk-adjusted returns.
But for people in other less fortunate parts of the world, Bitcoin represents something entirely different.
It is thought of as a payment technology to send cheap cross-border payments to loved ones, or as an easy way to hold one’s wealth with a simple seed phrase as they escape authoritarian regimes.
This recent report from Block came across my feed yesterday and it does a great job of displaying how Bitcoin is seen differently in various regions of the world. (05/31/2022).
It’s easy to forget that Bitcoin is a global asset open to anyone with a smartphone and an internet connection.
In the Western developed world, we often get caught up in the price movements because we have the privilege to care about that stuff. Others are using Bitcoin, not as a speculative investment, but as a necessity…as a tool of freedom.

Quote of the Day
“The dollar in its current form is an abomination, a tool of exploitation and corruption at a scale never before seen in history. Bitcoin embodies the original American spirit of truth, liberty, and individual rights. Bitcoin is freedom money.” - Stephen Cole, Bitcoiner and Angel Investor
