TD₿: 7 Surprising Facts About Bitcoin Pizza Day by Pete Rizzo
TL;DR 12 years ago, Laszlo Hanyecz famously spent 10,000 BTC on two pizzas, the first time BTC was used to purchase a real-world product.
Hey Bitcoiners,
Yesterday marked Bitcoin Pizza Day, a holiday in the Bitcoin community that celebrates the first transaction of Bitcoin for a real-world product.
The tale is now the stuff of legend. As the story goes, Laszlo posted “Pizza for bitcoins?” on the BitcoinTalk Forum in 2010 asking if anyone would accept his offer to pay for two pizzas in bitcoin.
At the current Bitcoin market price, those two pizzas now cost Laszlo a cool $300 million dollars, but Laszlo has said he has no regrets for doing it.
“I wanted to do the pizza thing because to me it was free pizza…I think that it’s great that I got to be part of the early history of bitcoin in that way,…I’d like to think that what I did helped,…But I think if it wasn’t me, somebody else would have come along.” - Laszlo, Interview with Bitcoin Magazine, 2018
Indeed…Laszlo is now a legend for helping to bootstrap the adoption of Bitcoin.
Bitcoin Historian Pete Rizzo wrote this article that shares some less well-known facts surrounding Bitcoin Pizza Day (05/21/2021).
Pizza Day is now a part of Bitcoin’s story forever, and it serves as an annual reminder of the power of a money that preserves its value over time.

Quote of the Day
“While saving in bitcoin can lead to a considerable growth of wealth over the long term through the mentality of HODLing one’s coins, it is arguably through the technology’s empowerment of oppressed communities that its true value proposition shines.” - Namcios, Writer and Reporter at Bitcoin Magazine
